The Harley Gallery on the Welbeck Estate is home to some of the finest pieces of artwork in the UK. The new 8,000 sq ft gallery provides high quality exhibition space for the display of fine and decorative arts from the Portland Collection. RED Systems provided structural glazed rooflight and window systems to the new venue.
Nestled in the heart of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, Welbeck extends to some 15,000 acres, straddling the borders of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Welbeck’s historic Portland Collection of fine and decorative arts has been amassed over the centuries by the Dukes of Portland and their families.
The existing gallery was built in 1994 and visitors enter through a glazed pavilion set in the grounds. The Harley Gallery and Foundation are named after Edward Harley, who married Lady Henrietta Cavendish Holles, heiress to Welbeck, in 1713. Edward Harley was one of the greatest bibliophiles and collectors in British history.

Due to its location and environment with surrounding buildings, RED worked with Caddick Construction to ensure it was in-keeping with the attached Welbeck Estate. The design had to be contemporary as the architecture is simple and restrained. Contained within a stone wall structure, the windows had to be detailed. This was one of the main challenges of the project.
