NOTTINGHAM STATION

Project Info

PROJECT: Nottingham Station

CLIENT: Vinci/Taylor Woodrow

MARKET SECTOR: Transport/Rail

PRODUCTS USED: Structural Glazing

RED PROJECT VALUE: £1.4m

Requirement

RED Systems were asked to take on the Structural Glazing package at Nottingham Train Station HUB. Works included ‘Blast Mitigating’ Structural Glazing to the Tram Interchange Hub which included 700m2 of façade glazing, glazed louvres and two structurally glazed rooflights with challenging geometry.

Background

East Midlands Trains and Networks Rail developed a design to renovate the existing Grade II listed Edwardian Station Building whilst adding a new state of the art tram station. British Transport Police required a bomb blast criteria to be incorporated to the façade design.

Project Comment

“The most challenging but rewarding project to date for RED Systems, I am very proud that we have completed this project – the finished project not only looks fantastic but knowing that we overcame and solved the most complex geometry whilst meeting the highest performance specification you will come across makes it even more satisfying.

It was handed over on time to our client and snag free – which is our primary aim. This classes this as a very successful project.”

Design

When providing the design solution for this project, our design team considered the Grade II status of the building as well as the complicated geometry of the rooflights.

A late design change through the conservation officers meant the architects original design proposal for steel structure to support the infill openings was no longer possible and RED Systems were appointed to develop an integral support structure using glass fins.

Working with specialist glazing consultants RED were able to manufacture 9m high laminated glass fins – this really pushed the boundaries of glass technology – because as well as the sheer height of the fins, RED needed to meet the bomb blast requirements.
