PROJECT: Bidston Moss Retail Park, Birkenhead

CLIENT: Globe Construction (no longer trading)

MARKET SECTOR: Retail

PRODUCTS USED: Metal Technology Curtain Walling and Doors

RED PROJECT VALUE: £300k

Requirement

Just down the M53 from RED’s head office on the Wirral, this once dilapidated out-of-town shopping area is now a thriving retail area for a number of big brands. RED was brought in to help out with the curtain walling and doors for some of the units. The scheme links Liverpool Wallasey Tunnel and the affluent West Wirral and consists of 11 prime units. It has recently been developed to cover more than 185,000 sq ft.

Background

Bidston Moss Retail Park is thought of as some prime retail land for shopping out of town but has been neglected in recent years, while other areas have flourished. It is now part of a larger development and has attracted a number of bigger brands into the area, including the area’s first 24-hour budget gym. The redevelopment of this area has brought in a number of new jobs and further boosted the local economy. RED is one of the number of local companies which helped transform the area.

Project Comment

This was a great project for RED, we love doing work on our doorstep that we are proud of. I can’t drive down the M53 without glancing over and thinking ‘we did that!’ It was a sad old retail park previously and it’s great to see new life and key retailers on there now for the local community.

Design

The foundations for the development were already in place. However, the development had to have a more contemporary feel so RED’s designers looked at similar ones in the area to gauge how it might look and feel.

Being local to RED, the company felt this was an important development to the area which has suffered economically while other areas have flourished. This corridor of Wirral is a vital channel for commuters so had to be attractive to passing trade. RED worked closely with the client to make sure the design was modern and accessible and we are proud with the result as Bidston Moss is now a hive of retail activity.
