Requirement

A three-storey new build high school based in Rhyl, North Wales. The aim was to replace the existing school building to educate more than 1,200 pupils aged 11-16. The project was joint funded by Denbighshire County Council and the Welsh government.

Background

Rhyl High School educates more than 1,200 pupils across the area. Willmott Dixon were chosen as the lead contractor on the project following their award-winning nearby Ysgol-y-Gogarth school which was delivered for pupils requiring special needs education. The original school buildings were demolished and completely rebuilt for the new-build school. The new build forms part of the government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Capital programme. As part of this project, RED Systems and Willmott Dixon worked closely with the local community, hiring local workers where possible to make sure the project ran smoothly.

Project Comment

We really enjoyed delivering this project alongside the Willmott Dixon Team to continue our excellent working relationship with this Tier One Contractor. We had early engagement with the client that enabled early ‘design-out’ of potential issues and the most competitive compliant solution. The finished building looks great and is a fantastic facility for the school – we are very proud. (Our installers enjoyed the summer staying on a local caravan site too!)

Design

RED worked with lead contractors Willmott Dixon on the project which would transform the high school into one of the education establishments of the future in Wales. The design had to be modern but also catering for a number of special needs children at neighbouring schools which would be using its facilities. Informal, coffee shop-style spaces where children can gather are common throughout the new build. The building was constructed to achieve a rating of “excellent” on the Building Research Establishment Methodology (BREEAM) scale.
