“Fantastic !” H.R.H Prince Charles, 18 July 2012

The Charleston Charlies (3) were delighted to represent The Jersey Arts in Healthcare Trust and meet  Prince Charles and Camilla on their recent visit to Jersey. This was a celebration of The Trusts’ recent receipt of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

At Prince Charles’ behest The Charleston Charlies played a chorus of ‘Yes Sir That’s My Baby.‘   ‘Fantastic !‘   enthused the amused and delighted future King of England. Some claim to have heard the utterance, ‘We really must get them down the Palace!,’ as Charles continued on his way spreading benevolence and aknowledging, on behalf of The Queen, the voluntary charitable work of the good people of Jersey !

A Kazoo solo delights The Prince !

September the 4th 2012 we had the pleasure of playing for The Benevolence Ball at London’s Cafe de Paris, organised by David Clarke - Chief Superintendant, City of London Police, and Sir Timothy  Ackroyd - who’ve kindly given us permission to use these pictures of the event.

The handsome Charleston Charlie’s were snatched from the beautiful bygone era and invited to help us rekindle the glamour, elegance and frivolity of the early jazz era as Sir Timothy Ackroyd took 160 guests on a romantic journey back to 1932 at the Cafe de Paris on September 4th.

The occasion was The Courage & Benevolence Ball in aid of the Debra Charity with the valiant Corporal Johnson Beharry VC and the altruistic Ms Jurga Zilinskiene on the list of guests.

To put the pressure on the talented [Oscar Bernhardt] and his mad cat boys the guests asked them to give us all their crazy rhythms and addictive tunes from their old days at the Savoy in the Roaring Twenties. To pack the final punch to their cocktail of summer frivolity, we added the new ingredient of the delicious “Broadway Badies”. Their infectious tap dance routines and fabulous rendering of the Charleston and other favourites provided the perfect blend to this delirious concoction.

On behalf of everyone involved in staging the Ball, I say thank you and well done Guys!

David Clarke

Not since the glory days of the ‘Frothy, bubbly cabaret’ called ‘Summer Time Frolics’, when the Café de Paris opened its doors to the starlets and party goers of the world; has a London nightclub seen anything to compare with you sensational chaps. Thank you for accompanying me on my special journey back to 1932; for helping us raise funds for a very good cause; and bringing such warmth to so many hearts.
