Social calendar 2016–2017

Booking information will be sent out to all Guildmen and Apprentices for whom we have a current email address. You can also access the booking system via the front page of the website. Generally booking opens at least a month before the event itself.

Saturday 12th November 2016, 10.45am – 2.30pm: Lord Mayor’s Show

The Lord Mayor’s Show is one of the high points of the City calendar. A Guild party will as usual watch the parade. Meeting by the Museum of London, and followed by lunch at Ironmongers Hall.

Thursday 15th December 2016, 6.30pm: Carol service at St Mary Woolnoth

A traditional carol service conducted by the Revd. Jeremy Crossley, with carol singing led by St Paul’s Girls School choir. Following the service we will retire for a Christmas supper. A collection for the Church will be taken during the Service.

Wednesday 18th January 2017, 10.45am – 3pm: Middle Temple & Temple Church

Tours of Middle Temple and Temple Church, both part of a site with a fascinating history that touches on the development of both the City and England’s legal professional. With lunch in the dining hall of Middle Temple.

Saturday 11th March 2017, 11am: Museum of London exhibition “Fire, fire, fire”

Discover London before, during and after the Great Fire of 1666 in an interactive exhibition marking the 350th anniversary of this infamous disaster. The fire led to the modernisation of housing and infrastructure and forced big attitudinal changes towards safety and poverty. Following our visit we will have a meal at a local pub.

Monday 13th March 2017, 10.30am: Mercers’ Hall Archives

A chance to dip into the archives at Mercers’ Hall, including the archives of the former Mercers’ School, and also old documents from St Paul’s School. Followed by lunch.

Saturday 20th May 2017, 2pm: City Walk: “Misteries of the City”

A light-hearted and fun walk round the City starting from Smithfield Market Grand Avenue at 2.00pm, in two hours we will pass 22 Livery Halls and many traces of other livery companies. A pub meal and refreshments will follow at Ye Olde Watling of Bow Lane.

The Guild’s programme of social events extends throughout the year, and runs alongside ceremonial occasions. All members and apprentices, and their guests, are welcome at all events. Details are emailed or posted to all members; please contact the Court Social Assistant to ensure that you are kept up-to-date.

Thursday 15th June 2017, 6.30pm – 9.30pm: Beating Retreat

The Household Division’s Beating Retreat is a spectacular evening pageant of music and military precision drill, including horses, cannon and fireworks. The theme for 2017 is Military Heroes.

Thursday 6th July 2017, 6pm: Annual Meeting followed by City Beerfest, Guildhall

The Guild’s Annual Meeting, to which all members and apprentices are welcome. Afterwards we’ll spill out into the Guildhall Yard, which will be filled with stalls from more than a dozen of Britain’s most popular breweries, with live music on stage throughout the day. Having tasted the Ale we will have dinner at Guildhall.

Saturday 8th July 2017: Visit to Ironbridge

A day trip to Blists Hill Victorian Town Ironbridge and a weekend (subject to interest) near Ironbridge. Blists Hill Victorian Town is a recreation of a Victorian working town, complete with shops, cottages and workplaces. Lunch will be served in the Coalport Museum followed by a tour.

Thursday 7th September 2017, 6.30pm: Bowls Evening at Finsbury Square

A light-hearted evening of bowls for Apprentices, Guildmen, and their partners, and also members of the Guild of Young Freemen. Followed by a buffet supper. Spectators are welcome — whether you play or not do please join us for supper!
