The Guild Master invites you to join her on a leisurely tour of the heart of the City of London, stepping back into the history of the City Livery Companies and their development into the modern charitable organisations of today. The walk will be light-hearted and fun, but will also cover the origins and powers of the craft guilds (or misteries) as monopolists of City trade; their rise to pre-eminence in the City; membership and governance, and how new companies are formed.

In the expert hands of City guide Mike Dudgeon, a Past Master of the Mercers’ Company, the story of the Guilds will begin from Smithfield Market Grand Avenue (nearest tube Farringdon) at 2.00pm on Saturday 20th May. We will meet on the right hand side of the Grand Avenue entrance at Long Lane. Over two hours we will pass 22 Livery Halls and many traces of other livery companies. Please bring casual dress suitable for a pleasant summer afternoon walk, and a good pair of walking shoes.

From Smithfield, we will weave through streets and alleyways via Postman’s Park, St Alban Gate, Oat and Foster Lanes, Garlick Hill and College Street to Dowgate Hill [Cannon Street Station], finally winding up for a light pub meal and refreshments in Ye Olde Watling of Bow Lane – convenient for Mansion House Station and other routes home.

Following on from our previous popular tours, we would be delighted if you could join us on an enjoyable, entertaining and enlightening trip through the past and present of London. For solely the walk, tickets are only £12.00 for Guildsman and guests and free for Apprentices. The optional pub meal in the historic Old Watling, famous as Sir Christopher Wren’s drawing office, is an additional £13.00.

With only 25 places available, please register your interest now for what’s sure to be a fascinating day out.
