A New Clerk for the Guild: Mrs Lorraine Andrews

On 18/10/2016, in Posts, by Timothy Myatt

The Guild Master is delighted to inform all readers that we have been able to appoint a successor to the retiring clerk, Alex Priest.  As many of you will know, we sought to appoint from within the Guild, but no one having stepped forward, we decided to approach a suitably qualified candidate outside our ranks.  We were fortunate to meet Mrs Lorraine Andrews who is retiring this month from her position as Office Manager and Membership Secretary to the Shellfish Association of Great Britain, posts she has held since 1995.  Mrs Andrews is also the Hon. Secretary of the Bermuda Institute for Oceanic Sciences.  She lives in Chingford, so attendance at Guild meetings in the City will not be difficult.

A Freeman of the City of London, Mrs Andrews is also a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers, so she is certainly well-grounded in City lore and procedures.  She is well-known to the GMS Master-elect, as a fellow member of the Langbourn Ward Club.  Indeed, we are grateful to Marie Heylin for first bringing her colleague to our attention.  Since then, I and three past-Masters have met and discussed the position with Mrs Andrews; we have found her well-qualified, personable and highly motivated.  Our intention is to introduce her to the Michaelmas Court as a candidate for honorary membership of the Guild.  I am advised that this will require a minor constitutional amendment which can be cleared early in the Court’s proceedings.

During the weeks leading up to the Michaelmas Court, the out-going clerk will help facilitate a smooth handover.  We are expecting Mrs Andrews to sit with Alex on the 27th, take the minutes with advice and take up her duties immediately thereafter.  I am sure all will do their best to make Lorraine most welcome in the Guild.  From a personal point of view, I am looking forward to consulting her on one of her several variegated hobbies – the history of the City of London.

AJP – Guild Master
